The harder we work, the more we realize that we need rest.  The more we rest, the more we realize that work is just a diversion from life's most pleasant activity, which is to rest and think about the possibility of working someday.

Subscribers of Globe Telecom complain about the decision of the Philippines' second largest telecommunication company to limit the amount of Internet data that they can download on their smartphones.

They also called the attention of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to Globe's strategy to switching subscribers with large data usage to low-speed technology such as 2G.

In response, the NTC told Globe to explain complaints over alleged data capping.

“The commission has received several complaints on your alleged data capping. Complaints alleged that you are placing them on the network with slow data connection once they reached a certain volume of data, e.g. 1 GB,” NTC commissioner Gamaliel Cordoba said in a letter to Globe dated Feb. 6.

The NTC directed Globe through senior vice president Froilan Castela to submit comments and explanation on or before Feb. 12.

NTC also summoned Globe officials to the regulator’s office in Quezon City for a meeting on Feb. 13 to “further discuss this matter.”

Globe had issued advisories to its customers that once usage reached 1 GB, the consumer would be shifted to 2G browsing.  Globe users can only enjoy their normal and faster browsing speed after midnight.

“When you exceed 1 GB/day, you are not disconnected from unlimited data services. The only thing that changes is your speed until midnight. After midnight, you’re back to your regular browsing speed,” Globe said in its Twitter account.

Globe said under the fair use policy, it was committed to providing fast and reliable mobile internet service.

“That's why we've taken steps to implement a fair use policy designed to reduce the speeds of only the 3 percent of users who are responsible for generating large volumes of traffic on our network which greatly impacts the service we offer to other paying subscribers,” it said.

Globe said these customers often had file-sharing software or peer-to-peer/torrent apps on their phones or tablets, and downloaded large-format files such as music, videos and movies consistently.

The company said this meant customers on an Internet promo and plan who exceeded 1 GB a day or 3 GB a month (whichever comes first) would experience browsing at slower speeds.

“This policy allows us to maintain the quality of our mobile internet service and give all Globe customers a fair opportunity to enjoy our network,” it said.

“Our fair use policy is aligned with the global industry practice of telecommunications providers anywhere in the world and is subject to change without prior notice,” it added.

Globe’s fair use policy applies to all surfing promos and data plans for Globe postpaid and Tattoo Lifestyle Sticks, except PowerSurf.

Monetary authorities in the Philippines are studying the regulation of Bitcoin to protect users of the digital currency. 

Central Bank Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. said they are studying the appropriate regulatory approach to this innovation. “We are trying to better understand the intricacies of its use and implications on consumer protection. This innovation could possibly offer a low-cost remittance solution, but we would need to have some level of confidence that the weaknesses could be addressed,” he said.

Governor Tetangco said although Bitcoins or virtual currencies could be used as a medium of exchange and unit of value, which are part of the traditional definition of money, these instruments are not issued “by a central bank.”

“It has recently come to the attention of the BSP [Central Bank] that virtual currencies like Bitcoins are now being exchanged in the Philippines. This is the reason we put out an advisory just this week to warn the public that in the Philippines these [and other virtual currencies] are still unregulated,” he said.

He said those who engage in virtual currency exchange could lose their money through a number of ways. He said these include outright fraud and system failure, as trading would be exchange platform-dependent.

“There have been a number of cases reported where the trading platforms have gone out of business or failed,” he said, adding that users might also commit some mistakes, for example when the virtual currencies were “stolen” from the users’ digital wallet.

“As we understand it, there still isn't global agreement on how to handle this new technological innovation,” Governor Tetangco said.

Bitcoin is defined by Wikipedia as a peer-to-peer payment system and digital currency introduced as open source software in 2009 by developer Satoshi Nakamoto. It is called a cryptocurrency, because it uses cryptography to control the creation and transfer of money.

The controversies surrounding bitcoins have alarmed regulators in Japan and the US.  Japan, in particular, has moved to outline rules on bitcoin trading, including barring banks and brokerages from handling the digital currency, after some bitcoin exchanges like Tokyo-based Mt. Gox collapsed.

The Philippine Stock Exchange (PSE) has introduced a new mobile application that enables investors to access disclosures, financial reports and other important information about listed companies through their mobile phones and tablets.

The PSE mobile application, called PSE Edge or PSE Electronic Disclosure Generation Technology, is available on both iOS and Android-powered devices and can be downloaded for free.

PSE Edge is the mobile app version of the Edge portal, an online disclosure system launched by PSE last year.

PSE president and CEO Hans Sicat said mobile app would be the first exchange-sponsored mobile app in Southeast Asia. “We will ahead of some our partner exchange in the region. With the Edge platform and the mobile app covering 80 percent of the world’s smartphones,” Sicat said.

Mr. Sicat said the launching of the app would complement other initiatives of the exchange which aimed to improve transparency and to expand retail base and online investors.

Smart Communications Inc. has disclosed its lineup of exciting postpaid offers for the new Samsung Galaxy S5 as it prepares for the smartphone’s simultaneous Philippine launch on April 11, 2014.

Users interested in acquiring Samsung’s latest flagship device can get one for free at Smart Postpaid’s UnliSurf Plan 2000, which already comes with unlimited mobile LTE surfing, 150 minutes of calls and 200 of texts to all networks under a 30-month contract.

The Galaxy S5 will also be available for P1,799 a month under UnliSurf Plan 999, with P800 monthly handset cash-out for 24 months. The plan comes with unlimited surfing for one month plus calls and texts.

Naspers  Ltd., a South Africa-based media company which owns OLX.ph, has taken over the domain name of Philippine online classified ads company Sulit.com.ph.  The domain name was rebranded to OLX.ph, following the merger of the two companies.

“Our goal is to dominate the online global classified ads. The name change represents our commitment to change how Filipinos perceive online selling. That selling stuff you no longer use is simple and can actually help you earn additional cash,” said OLX Philippines Managing Director RJ David.

Naspers also became the parent firm of sulit.com.ph. and OLX after acquiring a significant stake in the online classified firms. The merger of Sulit and OLX resulted in a 67-percent market share of the online commerce business.

On mobile devices, the Deezer app can be installed on iOS, Android, Windows Phone as well as Blackberry 10 smartphones and tablets. It can also be enjoyed using traditional desktop browsers in laptops and PCs.

Globe Telecom will extend the free Facebook promo offer for its subscribers until April 24, 2014. The free service, which began in October 2013, allows Globe subscribers to access the social networking site with no data charges.

Globe’s vice president for Mobile Data Services Jenny Granada-Echvarria said the offer was extended “due to the overwhelming response” from subscribers.

Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg earlier showcased the promo at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Spain, citing the partnership with Globe in connecting more Filipinos to the internet.

Under the promo, Globe users can access Facebook on feature phones and smartphones across all Facebook mobile platforms whether via the Facebook app or Facebook’s mobile site m.facebook.com without charges.

Customers are also notified if they will incur data charges once a link that leads out of Facebook is clicked to prevent “bill shock.”

To view content outside Facebook, prepaid users with insufficient load can also “loan” a 10MB data plan for only P10, which will be deducted on their succeeding top-up.

Globe Telecom and Smart Communication have teamed up with music streaming service providers Spotify, SPINNR and Deezer to allow their subscribers to stream songs and music through their mobile devices.

Smart cited the big potential for growth in revenues from music streaming, based on a recent report by the global music trade group that revenues from music streaming grew by 51.3 percent in 2013.

"Streaming is without a doubt the future of music consumption, and Smart has already paved the way for Filipinos to enjoy this new way of listening to their favorite songs through services such as SPINNR, the first music-streaming service in the country," said Charles A. Lim, executive vice president and head of the Wireless Consumer Division at Smart.

Lim said the growth in revenues from music streaming signified a shift in consumer preference toward more convenient and affordable ways of accessing their favorite tunes.

Smart teamed up with music-streaming services SPINNR and Deezer,.

SPINNR charges P2.50 per day or P49 a month, with unlimited access to millions of tracks from its music catalog.  Spinnr is available to all 72.5 million Smart, Talk 'N Text and Sun Cellular subscribers.

Meanwhile, Globe Telecom  partnered with Spotify to provide music-streaming service. Peter Bithos, Globe's chief operating adviser, said the service will present advertisers with a unique way to engage an audience on an "emotional level while enjoying one of their favorite activies--listening to muic."

Spotify is the world’s largest and fastest growing music service of its kind, with more than 24 million active users.

"Spotify connects advertisers with highly engaged, passionate, and socially active consumers while they’re doing the thing they love the most - listening to music. Pairing audio with visual advertising is not only one of the most powerful forms of marketing online, it’s also a unique new addition to the Philippine advertising market,” Sunita Kaur, Spotify’s director for Asia said.

Globe Telecom claims it is gaining the upper hand in winning more  postpaid subscribers, as postpaid revenues posted an 18-percent year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2014.

Globe  said that as of end-March 2014, postpaid revenues reached P7 billion, up from P6 billion in the previous year.  Postpaid revenues formed 38 percent of total mobile revenues during the period. 
It said mobile revenues grew 8 percent to P18.5 billion in the first quarter from last year’s level of P17.1 billion, on higher revenue contributions from mobile data and domestic voice services.
Postpaid subscribers totaled 2.09 million as of end-March, up 12 percent from previous year’s 1.9 million, with gross additions reaching close to 200,000 on the back of exclusive device offers and innovative postpaid deals which helped boost subscriber gains.

Globe vice president for postpaid business and devices Raul Macatangay said the consistent performance of the segment was due to the strong take-up of fully-customizable mySUPERPLAN paired with the latest smartphones, innovative offers and postpaid deals, and complemented by strong after-sales support.

Globe said it sustained its momentum into the second quarter of 2014, by launching the newest Samsung Galaxy S5 under its suite of postpaid plans and recently offering the device in electric blue and copper gold.

It said on top of a fully-customizable plan, subscribers are also entitled to exclusive privileges such as free 1-month gadget care coverage, free Globe apps such as GServices, GCash and GMovies, as well as the opportunity to purchase apps from the Samsung App Store and charge them to their postpaid bill.

Meanwhile, Philippine Long Distance Telephone Co. (PLDT), the parent company of Smart Communications and Sun Cellular, said it will roll out an additional 15,000 kilometers of new fiber optic cable facilities this year, with an investment of over P1 billion.

This would extend the PLDT group’s fiber network to nearly 100,000 kilometers by the end of 2014.
“We are further fortifying our fiber advantage which is critical to our ability to handle the expected explosion of data traffic in the coming years,” said PLDT president and CEO Napoleon Nazareno.

“Our changing revenue mix underscores that our future clearly lies in data and fiber, driving our strategic investments in technical infrastructure in recent years and giving us a decisive advantage in today’s data-driven world,” he said.

Nazareno said the PLDT group’s integrated fixed and wireless network remain unrivalled in its ability to provide high-quality voice, data and multimedia services to customers who would benefit most from the fiber expansion.

PLDT said it had expanded its fiber optic network to 85,000 kilometers by the end of the first quarter, or five times more than Globe Telecom. The aggressive expansion of PLDT’s fiber optic network will continue this year, Nazareno said.
