Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) Governor Amando Tetangco Jr. has been named one of the world’s best central bankers for the fifth time by an international magazine.

Global Finance magazine awarded the heads of the central banks of the Philippines, Malaysia and Taiwan with the highest rating.
Governor Tetangco, Bank Negara Malaysia Governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz and Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) Governor Fai-Nam Perng were all given an “A” rating.

This is the fifth time Governor Tetangco has been named as one of the world’s best central bankers. He received the same recognition in 2006, 2007, 2011 and 2012.
Meanwhile, Banco Central de Chile Governor Rodrigo Vergara and the European Central Bank President Mario Draghi were given the second highest rating, an “A-.”

“As developed economies begin the gradual route to recovery and some of the largest emerging markets continue to slow down, the world’s central bankers face a challenging time in managing monetary policy to positively influence economic stability and growth,” Global Finance publisher Joseph Giarraputo said in a statement.
“Every year, we assess the determination of central bankers to stand up to political interference and their efforts at influencing their governments on such issues as spending and economic openness to foreign investment and financial services,” he said.

The annual Central Banker Report Cards, which rates central bank governors of more than 50 countries, was first published in 1994.
Factors assessed include inflation control, economic growth goals, currency stability and interest rate management.

Globe Telecom Inc. expects to increase its prepaid subscribers, as it offers unlimited messaging services for free, as part of its new call and text bundle.

Globe senior advisor for consumer business Peter Bithos said the Globe Prepaid GoUNLI30 was a bundled prepaid offer, providing subscribers with unlimited texts to all networks, unlimited calls to Globe and TM users and unlimited access to instant messaging and chat applications Viber, Facebook Messenger, KakaoTalk and major OTT players without the need for Wi-Fi or additional data charges.

Globe also launched a dedicated mobile Internet promo for customers who use messaging applications frequently.   The UNLICHAT25 service is a mobile Internet promo which offers uninterrupted use of Viber, Facebook Messenger, KakaoTalk and major OTT players for only P25 for one day, without the need for Wi-Fi.

Globe is at the forefront of innovation once again as the first telco in the world to bundle our unlimited call and text service with free access to the world’s major messaging applications. With our modernized network, we now have the capability to do first-to-market offers like these that give our subscribers access to bandwidth-heavy services such as data and apps, making their mobile experience better than ever before,” Bithos said.

“True to our promise of enjoying Globe your way, we allow our customers to communicate via OTT players for free their own way,” he said.

“Our customers are social, technology-savvy users, who constantly look for new ways to connect with their contacts and friend circles – here and overseas. It is our job to allow them to do so at a reasonable price,” Mr. Bithos said.

The mobile Internet promos will allow Globe subscribers to connect with other users around the world regardless of mobile networks or even location, as long as they have accounts from the chat applications, he said.

To register, subscribers can text GOUNLI30 and UNLICHAT25 to 8888, or call *143# for free. Both GoUNLI30 and UNLICHAT25 support major OTT players.

Globe’s mobile subscribers stood at 36.1 million as of end-June this year, including 34.2 million prepaid subscribers, which was up 14 percent from last year’s 30.1 million.

Smartphone Penetration Rate in the Philippines

Google revealed recently that the current smartphone penetration rate is now at 39%, citing market research firm Ipsos MediaCT’s recent survey on smartphone usage in the Philippines. The survey said smartphones are affecting consumer behavior and giving businesses a new window for strategic marketing.

Seven in ten Filipino smartphone users never leave home without their device and 33% have spent more time online in the past six months than they did before that period. “We’ve observed a strong reliance on smartphones for everyday use. For many, a smartphone serves multiple purposes and they get most of their local info from searches done on mobile,” said Narciso Reyes, Google Philippines Country Manager.

The survey found that a string of activities are most commonly done on smartphones including social networking and app use; 87% watch their videos on mobile. A majority of smartphone users were also found to multitask while on mobile,  they watch television, read a magazine, or listen to music while using Internet on their device.

Search stands out in smartphone usage: A sizeable chunk, 88%, do research for product or service on their phones.  63% searched on topics such as product information, 53% on travel, 49% on restaurants and bars, and 38% even searched for apartment or housing information.

There is also significant search on local information at 93%, with 88% taking action—connecting with the business, visiting the business, telling others about it, or making a purchase—after searching. Having a smartphone anytime, anywhere has enabled this frequent mobile consultation: 44% search daily, 72% weekly.

As much as 98% of the respondents also said they notice mobile ads.

“With this very high potential, businesses can look at how to creatively incorporate mobile into their marketing strategies. Making business information searchable can be a start to building online visibility. Customer engagement should follow,” said Reyes.

Google's innovative search technologies connect millions of people around the world with information every day. Founded in 1998 by Stanford Ph.D. students Larry Page and Sergey Brin, Google today is a top web property in all major global markets. Google's targeted advertising program provides businesses of all sizes with measurable results, while enhancing the overall web experience for users. Google is headquartered in Silicon Valley with offices throughout the Americas, Europe, and Asia. For more information, visit  www.google.com.ph

Microsoft Takes Over Nokia Cellphones

Nokia cellphones, once the most popular mobile phone brand in the world manufactured in Finland, is about to be handed over to Microsoft Corp., the US sofware and operating system developer.

Owning a Nokia phone in the 1990s to the early 2000s was considered almost a necessity, because everyone else owned one.  Nokia revolutionized text messaging or SMS, which helped the Philippines attained the status as the text messaging capital of the world.

Then came the smartphones, the Android OS, the iPhones and the iPads which made Nokia phones almost obsolete in terms of features and functionality.

Reports said Microsoft Corp will buy Nokia Oyj's phone business and license its patents for 5.44 billion euros or US$7.2 billion.

The sale of Nokia's phone business marks the exit of a 150-year-old company that once dominated the global cellphone market and remains one of Europe's premier technology brands, according to a report by Reuters.

There was a time working for Nokia was the dream job for many executives, because of the so many perks offered by the company.  However, its inability to produce its own software and the proud hesitation to embrace the Android OS led to its downfall.

Samsung of Korea filled the gap in the market that Nokia failed to take advantage of.  Now, Chinese mobile phone brands that run on Android are also raking in profits, despite their low selling prices.

The downfall of Nokia should be a lesson for other companies such as Blackberry Ltd. and even non-telecom companies.  Innnovation is the name of the game and the satisfaction of the consumers should be their primary goal.

It won't be surprising if other companies such as Apple, Samsung and even Microsoft follow the downfall of Nokia, if they do not live up to the expectations of the ever-demanding global consumers.

The Duo service aimed to serve Filipino workers and migrants in Canada as well as their contacts in the Philippines.

Canada is home to 900,000 permanent residents and transients from the Philippines, making it a viable market for Globe’s roster of international services.

“Almost 90 percent of Filipinos in Canada are permanent migrants who are unable to visit family and friends back home as frequent as those in other countries, and we are proud to be able to give them an innovative and affordable way to keep in touch with loved ones in the Philippines for less than C$1 a day,” said Globe’s International Business Group head Rizza Maniego-Eala.

Duo Canada is a subscription service that assigns a virtual Canadian landline number to a registered Globe number in the Philippines. This allows Filipinos in Canada to call their families in the country through their virtual Canadian landline number.

Calls to the virtual Canadian landline number assigned to the Globe subscriber will be charged at domestic Canadian call rates, effectively lowering call costs. This allows Filipinos in Canada to contact their families in the Philippines at a more affordable rate compared to standard IDD charges.

Subscribers can also choose which Canadian landline number will be assigned to the Globe subscriber in the Philippines. Available landline numbers are for Calgary, Durham, Edmonton, London, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver, Windsor and Winnipeg.

The service is open to Globe Postpaid, Prepaid and TM subscribers.

Duo International is also offered in the United States, Korea and the United Kingdom.

Filipino women now hold the titles in every major international beauty pageant, after Megan Young, a 23-year-old Filipino-American who was born in the US, was crowned Miss World 2013 during the coronation night held in Bali, Indonesia on September 28, 2013. The latest win by Young means the Philippines became among the first countries in the world to achieve a grand slam in international beauty pageants.

Young became the first representative from the Philippines to win the title in 62 years, after Gwendoline Ruais placed second to Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela in 2011.  Actress Ruffa Gutierrez placed 2nd runner-up to Miss World 2003 Lisa Hanna of Jamaica.  In 1973, Evangeline Pascual was the first runner-up in the 1973 Miss World contest.

Young was earlier disqualified from the 2013 Binibining Pilipinas contest (the screening body for Miss Universe contest) because of her nude photos that appeared on a men's magazine in 2012. She was accepted to join the Miss World Philippines contest and won.

Also on September 7, 2013,  Mutya Johanna Datul, a 21-year-old lass from Isabela province, became the first Filipino woman and Asian to win the Miss Supranational beauty pageant held in Belarus.

Filipinas or Pinays now own the titles in the four major beauty pageants, including Miss Universe, Miss World, Miss International and Miss Earth.

In the Miss Universe contest, Gloria Diaz won the crown in 1969 while Maria Margarita Roxas Moran won it in 1973.  There were near misses, by Lalaine Bennett who placed third runner-up in 1963; Rose Marie Singson Brosas who placed Fourth Runner Up in 1975 Miss Universe; Maria Rosario Rivera Silayan, third runner up in 1980 Miss Universe; Maria Desiree Erese Verdadero, third runner up in 1984 Miss Universe; Charlene Mae Gonzalez, 6th in the 1994 Miss Universe; Miriam Redito Quiambao, first runner up in 1999 Miss Universe; Maria Venus Bayonito Raj, fourth runner-up in the 2010 Miss Universe; Shamcey Gurrea Supsup, third runner Up in 2011 Miss Universe; and Janine Mari Raymundo Tugonon, first runner-up in 2012 Miss Universe.

Four Filipino women were crown Miss International.  They include Gemma Cruz, the 1964 Miss International; Aurora McKenney Pijuan, 1970 Miss International; Mimilanie Laurel Marquez, 1979 Miss International; and Precious Lara San Agustin Quigaman, 2005 Miss International.

Those who nearly won the Miss International pagent include Evelyn Santos Camus, second runner up in 1971; Yolanda Adriatico Dominguez, second runner up in 1972; and Maria Elena Suarez Ojeda, fourth runner up in 1973.

Meanwhile, Karla Paula Ginteroy Henry won as the 2008 Miss Earth, a beauty contest usually held in the Philippines.

Four Filipino women won in the Miss Asia Pacific International contest. They include Maria del Carmen Ines Zaragoza in 1982, Gloria Aranas Dimayacyac in 1983, Lorna VillanuevaLegaspi in 1989 and Michelle Zulueta Aldana in 1993.

Maricar Manalaysay Balagtas became the first Filipino to win the Miss Globe International title in 2001.

Maria Esperanza Manzano won as Miss Tourism International in 2000 while Rizzini Alexis Gomez achieved the feat in 2012.

Justine Vinluan Gabionza won as Miss Tourism Queen International in 2006.  Cecille Deltette was crowned Miss University in 1986.  Noella Mae Evangelista was 2003 Queen of Tourism International while April Love Antolo Jordan was the 2009 Beauty of the World.

Seven Popular Urban Legends in the Philippines

Young Filipinos may be interested in hearing the following popular urban legends which have been told many times over the years.  These urban legends may in fact read like historical events, but they sound so extreme, farfetched or exaggerated, hence they must be urban legends, right?

Nowhere else in the world can tales like these sound so hyperbolic.  Here are some of the urban legends that could still baffle our mind to this day, because of how severe, how extreme or how magnified (if you want to go to that extent) the characters, the events and the plot were described.  It is up to you whether you would believe them as true or dismiss them as popular urban legends.

  1. A woman had 2,000 pairs of shoes.  Rumors have it that in 1986, after the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos was toppled after ruling the country for over 20 years when about 10,000 people reportedly just disappeared, the people who stormed Malacanang Palace reportedly discovered a collection of 2,000 pairs of shoes belonging to former First Lady Imelda Marcos.  Why is it an urban legend?  Well, how can anybody wear 2,000 pairs of shoes? And how could 10,000 victims of human rights just disappear? And why is Imelda Marcos a congresswoman today?
  2. There were stories in Maguindanao that a group of journalists and political supporters of one candidate suddenly disappeared in the morning of November 23, 2009.  Some 58 individuals, including 34 local journalists, were reportedly killed and buried using an excavator, by a group of henchmen of political landlords belonging to the Ampatuan family.  Why is it an urban legend?  How could anybody kill 34 journalists and attempt to make it a secret? And why was nobody convicted yet, if it really happened?
  3. Garbage is not only filthy, it can also kill, so says an urban legend that has been circulating for more than a decade now.  The legend has it that on July 12, 2000, around 500 garbage scavengers who were living literally at the Payatas dumpsite in Quezon City were buried alive under tons of trash when a 50-foot garbage mountain collapsed on their makeshift houses during heavy torrential rains.  Why is it an urban legend? Well, are there people living with the garbage in the Philippines in the first place? Really?
  4. Here is an urban legend that could easily eclipse the notoriety of the Titanic disaster, which reportedly killed 1,500 people in 1912.  Here in the Philippines, there is a persistent overblown story about a passenger ship called MV Doña Paz, owned by Sulpico Lines, which allegedly collided with oil tanker the Vector off Mindoro Island on December 20, 1987.  The incident, according to the legend, left 4,341 people dead. Why is it an urban legend?  Well, no ship was supposed to carry more than 4,000 people in the first place.  If it was true, why is Sulpicio Lines still operating its vessels to this day.
  5. Banditry exists only in the movies, right, but in Mindanao, there is this melodramatic story about a group of extremists that raided an entire town. According to legend, members of the Muslim extremist Abu Sayyaf (Bearers of the Sword) group burned the Christian town of Ipil in Zamboanga Sibugay province in the morning of April 3, 1995.  The bandits, according to the legend, burned the houses and commercial establishments in Ipil town, took dozens of hostages and shot dead at least 54 residents of the town. Why is it an urban legend? Well, how can any decent government allow a bandit group to co-exist with the civilian population in the first place?
  6. A Philippine president was convicted of plunder.  Could it be true that former President Joseph Ejercito Estrada was once convicted of plunder, or theft involving more than P500 million.  According to legend, Erap was ousted from power in January 2001 and in 2007, the anti-graft court found him guilty of plunder and sentenced him to a jail term of 40 years.  He was accused of receiving P545-million protection money from jueteng operators, diverting P130 million in tobacco excise taxes, receiving P189.7-million kickback from Belle Corp. and maintaining billions of pesos in bank accounts not declared in his statement of assets and liabilities.  This must be an urban legend, because as far as we know, Joseph Estrada is now the mayor of Manila and his two sons became senators.  One of his wives, Loi Ejercito, also served as a senator while another wife, Guia Gomez, became mayor of San Juan. What a legend!
  7. Here is one recent urban legend that sounds so exaggerated or, if we may say, extravagant.  If Imelda Marcos had 2,000 shoes, there is a businesswoman who owns more than 50 homes in the Philippines and the US. And one of her bath tubs is reportedly full of money.  What? According to legend, businesswoman Janet Lim Napoles established 12 non-government organizations that absorbed the pork barrel of senators and congressmen as well as heads of government agencies, to fund invisible projects for the poor.  Common, why will anybody need 50 houses, with none of these houses equipped with a safe, that a bath tub is needed to store money.  And who in the world of politics will allow a businesswoman to get a share in their loot?  And why will anybody call Napoles a businesswoman, if she runs non-profit or non-government organizations? Well, it must just be an urban legend.

Facebook Posts that Some People Find Offensive

Facebook posts that some people find offensiveBeauty is in the eye of the beholder, as the saying goes.  The same applies with Facebook posts, which can be interpreted a thousand ways, by a thousand readers.  What is beautiful to some, may be the opposite to others.

So be careful when sharing Facebook posts, especially when you are angry, happy, jealous or jubilant.  The mood of your posts can reflect your character on some people's eyes and a sudden change in your sentiment can be interpreted you are moody, or worse unstable.

Here are other examples of Facebook posts or status that some people find annoying or arrogant, if not offensive.

  1. You might think a frequent change of Facebook status about you being single or in a relationship will excite people.  Think again. Although you might want to declare to the world you have just exited a short-term relationship, your new Facebook post may also offend not only your ex, but also the people who are confused as to how often you enter or exit a relation.
  2. Selfie or self-portrait can be cute the first time.  But showing too much selfie can unmask something... like you have nobody else who wants to take your picture, so you are forced to use the mirror to take your photo or you have to use the front camera of your smartphone, which has less resolution.
  3. Food posts can whet appetite, but taking the photos of your every meal or dine outs can offend people who are not as privileged, including those who are on a diet.
  4. Travel posts can show how adventurous you are, but making people believe you can travel to any part of the world on a whim, may attract the attention of some group, like kidnappers who are eyeing their next potential rich target.
  5. Posting pictures of your newly acquired assets, including luxury cars or designer bags, shoes or clothes, cannot possibly make people happy for you.  You can actually make them envious, which is not a good thing.
  6. You being in the best parties in town, as shown in your Facebook posts, reveals how you love to party.  It also reveals your constant search for a new excitement, a new lover, or a new victim, whatever that means to you.
  7. If you hate someone, avoid declaring it on Facebook, or your friends will discover how bitter, how nasty or how nagging you can be.
  8. Facebook photos of your sexy friends, in their seductive posts, can ruin relationships, including your past, present and future relationships.
  9. Constant greetings between you and your beau on Facebook, like on a daily basis, can make some people ask why you find privacy a bad thing.
  10. Liking sex videos or a bad joke on Facebook can reveal your taste for such materials and your insensitivity to what people think about you - which may not be bad thing, except for what your parents or grandparents will tell you about how well they have tried to raise you.

10 signs that cell phones affect you social life

Mobile phones are now indispensable tools of communication, no doubt, but sometimes they become more than devices.  Cellphones now seem to be an extension of your arms, and always kept within a meter from your eyes.

Here are the ten signs that mobile phones, or smartphones as you would like to call them, disrupt your social life and affect your personal communication with people.

  1. You would rather exchange SMS, text messages or tweets via cell phone, instead of talking to your friends or family, even if they are just a seat away.
  2. You keep playing with your cell phone to make other people think you are in constant communication with important people.
  3. You look at your cell phone more often than your boyfriend or girlfriend, who is most likely doing the same thing.
  4. Cell phone is your alarm clock in the morning, and your sleeping pill in the evening.
  5. During dinner with the family, you pick up your mobile phone, instead of the fork, to text your father you don't like the food that your mother prepared.
  6. You keep staring at your phone, as if waiting for an important call, although you are not sure if it is really important.
  7. You begin to smile while alone, upon hearing your phone beep.
  8. You can never leave home without your phone, because you think you are going to miss important messages or calls, even on a Sunday.
  9. You become irritated when people don't return your calls or text you back as immediately as you do, when it comes to their messages.
  10. Although you love your present cell phone, you will replace it with the newest version, as soon as it becomes available.

Globe Telecom, one of the leading mobile networks in the Philippines, said its subsidiary Kickstart Ventures is investing in Lenddo, which continues to grow as a social-network based lending platform for emerging markets.

Lenddo, the world’s first online platform that allows members to use their online social connections to build their creditworthiness and access local financial services, has raised an additional $6 million in funding from new investors such as Globe Telecom’s Kickstart Ventures, Golden Gate Ventures and Skype co-founder, Toivo Annus.

The funds will be used to accelerate an aggressive global rollout as well as develop enhanced features for users of Facebook, Linkedin and Android.  Recently, Lenddo was selected by the World Economic Forum as a Tech Pioneer, celebrated for pioneering technologies that hold promise of transforming business and society.

"The Lenddo community continues to see huge growth around the world, as we have expanded our operations this past year from thePhilippines to Colombia to Mexico,” said Lenddo co-founder and CEO, Jeff Stewart.  “Our loans provide funds for everyday people to access education, health care and home improvement.”

Founded in 2011, the Lenddo community has over 350,000 members who are able to use their online reputations on social networks such as Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter and Google to access life improving loans to which they may otherwise not have access. Lenddo plans to focus its planned expansion on Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Minette Navarrete, President of Kickstart Ventures, Inc. said “emerging markets have an increasingly important middle class who are still excluded from traditional financial systems, but technology can redefine how this market accesses financial services. Digital inclusion in the financial services space is as much a social responsibility as it is a rapidly growing global opportunity, and Lenddo’s proprietary algorithms and deep market insight are breaking down barriers. We are excited to help the team with our experience and network as they expand in the region and beyond.”

"Southeast Asia is one of the fastest growing markets in the world today, but traditional banks are unwilling or unable to lend credit to nearly 610 million denizens. That's why we're so excited by Lenddo's concept of financial empowerment. Through its proprietary technology and industry standard accreditations, Lenddo's innovative solution leverages the power of social networks to help traditional banks issue credit to over half a billion people.” said Vinnie Lauria, a Partner at Golden Gate Ventures

Lenddo's mission is to economically empower the middle class in developing countries. To accomplish this, Lenddo is the world’s first online platform that allows members to use their online social connections to build their creditworthiness and access local financial services. Lenddo is currently providing loans to members in Colombia, Mexico and the Philippines.

Smart Cel-Fi Boosts Signal

Smart Communications has begun using Cel-Fi, a signal-boosting device that eliminates dead spots inside homes and offices in the Philippines.  It said the device also improves mobile reception for voice and data in enclosed spaces.

Smart Chief Wireless Advisor Orlando Vea said these indoor dead spots may be may be attributed to nearby physical obstructions causing signal degradation and result in dropped calls, delayed messages and crawling upload and download speeds.

“As the leader in wireless services, Smart has continually been on the lookout for new technologies that can enhance the consumers’ mobile experience and offer the best value for them,” said Mr. Vea.

"Cel-Fi offers a lot of promise because it functions much like a personal cell site and boosts the network performance in corners where signal strength is challenged.”

The Cel-Fi taps at least one bar of available 3G signal and amplifies it, effectively boosting both 3G and 4G HSPA+ mobile connectivity throughout a specific area.

Designed by US-based Nextivity, the device can handle 60 simultaneous calls and support high-speed connections reaching 42 Mbps in an area of up to 1,200 sq. m., making it ideal for homes and small offices.

A set of Cel-Fi consists of a window unit and coverage unit, which communicate to each other wirelessly. The window unit is meant to be stationed at a spot where the strongest signal from the network carrier is received.

The coverage unit is also positioned at the center of the house or a building.

When powered up, the window unit relays whatever signal it receives to the coverage unit, which then cleans the signal, converts it and amplifies it throughout the whole area.

The Cel-Fi is a plug-and-play device and may be installed in minutes with no need for cables, antennas or configuration.

It relies on self-organizing algorithms to maximize coverage area and makes sure it does not interfere with mobile operator networks or impede the signals of other subscribers.

Compliant with the strict standards of the Federal Communications Commission, Cel-Fi is authorized for use by 120 mobile operators around the world, including AT&T and T-Mobile.

How to have free Facebook access at GlobeGlobe Telecom and Facebook recently collaborated to provide Facebook access to Globe's 36 million subscribers, without the need of Wi-Fi, in the Philippines for three months.

Aside from offering Facebook at zero data charges, the collaboration between the two global companies also paved the way for subscribers to enjoy first-of-its-kind customer experience innovations such as availability of access on feature phones and smartphones across all Facebook mobile platforms whether via the Facebook app or Facebook’s mobile site m.facebook.com, advice of charge notifications, one-click to purchase data plans, and data access lending to access links outside Facebook.
GlobePresident and CEOErnest Cu and Globe Senior Advisor for Consumer Business Peter Bithos recently met Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg in Menlo Park, California, USA to seal the partnership.

Cu said the partnership aims to break “barriers” that keep millions of Filipinos from accessing Facebook on their mobile phones, which include not having enough prepaid credits.

Globe's postpaid and prepaid subscribers as well as TM users with smartphones and feature phones can access the Facebook app or m.facebook.com for free starting October 31, 2013 without the need for Wi-Fi or a data plan.

Aside from the free service, users who wish to access content outside Facebook will be notified if they will incur data charges. The user can avail of the one-click registration to a data plan to continue browsing.

Those without prepaid load can also access content outside Facebook by “loaning” P10 worth of load, which will be deducted on their next top-up.
The customer experience innovations eliminate billshock or “nakaw load.”

“What Globe is launching is not just free Facebook for three months, but we’re launching a customer experience that has been designed end-to-end trying to overcome key fears,” said Peter Bithos, Globe’s senior advisor for consumer business.

Chris Daniels, vice president of partnerships at Facebook, said the social networking site’s mission was “to give people the power to share and make the world more open and connected.”

Daniels said there is a big opportunity in the Philippines, which currently ranks 8th in the world in Facebook users, with an estimated 30 million people owning accounts.
“Philippines to us creates an enormous opportunity to connect to more people. There are a hundred million people in the Philippines and only about 30 million of them access the internet every month, so we need to connect more people there,” said Daniels.

Daniels said the partnership with Globe was forged to connect to its 36 million subscribers.

“We found in Globe a partner who is at the leading edge of innovative companies and is willing to make it happen and we are very excited to bring free Facebook to Globe’s 36 million customers in the Philippines,” he said.

Starting October 31, 2013, Globe subscribers can dial *143# and select FREE FB to know more about Globe Free Facebook.

“Over the past months, the engineering, business development and marketing teams at both Globe and Facebook have worked together to plan and design the customer experience from scratch,” Globe consumer business senior advisor Peter Bithos said.

“This includes making the service available across all Facebook mobile platforms, rolling out a system that alerts users once they are about to click a link that will incur them data charges, paving the way for subscribers to easily subscribe to a data plan without having to leave Facebook,” Bithos said.

“This service testifies how Globe is transforming itself beyond just an access carrier. Globe is striving to be a leading digital brand catering to the needs of digital Filipinos who need to be connected to their social circles around the world,” he said.

“We’re thrilled to be working with them to give Globe subscribers access to Facebook without data charges across our apps and mobile website,” said Daniels.

How to stream videos using Smart's LTE

Smart Communications Inc. has conducted the first video multicast over long term evolution connection in the Philippines.

The successful trial put Smart’s network at par with industry leaders Verizon in the United States and Telstra in Australia, which have both kicked off trials on their LTE networks.

Smart said when fully developed, the technology would allow people to watch clear, lag-free live video on their LTE-capable smartphones and tablets.

Smart’s LTE multicast trial was also the first in Southeast Asia, and the world’s first over 2.1 GHz frequency, according to Huawei Technologies of China, which provided the network equipment for the testing.

LTE is currently the fastest commercially available 4G wireless broadband coverage for mobile networks, which allows users to download data at speeds reaching up to 100 mbps.

The emerging technology, called the evolved Multimedia Broadcast Multicast Services or eMBMS, taps the functionality and speed of LTE to deliver rich multimedia content, such as live video, to a large number of consumers efficiently.

The content is then transmitted wirelessly by LTE-capable cell stations to mobile devices.

Aside from live content, the eMBMS is also suitable for delivering pre-loaded content like news, music, software, ads and other data to a mass audience.

Smart said for its pilot LTE multicast, it streamed pre-loaded videos on three channels from its base station in Quezon City to another base station in Makati.

The videos were aired seamlessly on three LTE-capable handsets provided by Huawei, as well as a TV set equipped with a device that converts data received by an LTE Sim.

“As the forerunner of LTE technology in the country, Smart is proud to hit a new milestone for the country and blaze the trail for eMBMS, which extends the capabilities of our robust LTE infrastructure. Among many things, this successful trial shows the readiness of our network to deliver the services of the future,” said Smart and PLDT Technology Group head Roland Peña.

“Smart has consistently been forward-looking, and this successful initiative allows us to see a glimpse of the future now. The eMBMS technology opens up a wide array of possibilities to serve our consumers and our supercharged network allows us to realize these possibilities, Peña said.

Smart said because of the growing usage of mobile multimedia content around the world, major telecoms in Korea and United Kingdom also expressed interest in eMBMS technology early this year.

The eMBMS technology stands out for its one-to-many transmission or multicast feature and presents a viable alternative to one-to-one transmission, or unicast, which entails sending similar content to each user.

With the latest compression methods, eMBMS also substantially reduces the bandwidth required to delivering multimedia content. This simplifies the process and reduces the cost of transmitting data.

Smart, which pioneered and launched the use of LTE in the Philippines in August 2012, has grown its LTE coverage to over 1,200 sites, across around 180 cities and municipalities. Smart LTE also covers all 17 cities and municipalities that make up Metro Manila.

Smart successfully conducted the country’s first trial of LTE-Advanced in August, which can support data services with speeds of from 100 to 400 Mbps.

Aside from LTE, Smart also offers HSPA+ and WiMax as part of its suite of 4G technologies. In total, Smart has about 10,000 4G-capable base stations,  which is almost twice the size of competition and covers 85 percent of the country’s population, or around 78.4 million Filipinos.
